About the Author Dr. Seuss was born Theodor Geisel in Springfield, Massachusetts on March 2, 1904. After attending Dartmouth College and Oxford University, he began a career in advertising. The title story explores the inevitable loss of innocence that is part of growing up. Told through the eyes of two children who spend their days in a carefree paradise of walking and talking, the narrative takes us on a journey of abrupt change and sudden truths. When told by their father that they must no longer hop on him (executed with a jarring break in meter), the children open their eyes for the first time, literally as well as spiritually. They become adults and fade from the story never to appear again.
