Chapters Inc. was formed following the merger of Coles and SmithBooks, then Canada’s two largest bookstore chains. In 1994, Canadian General Capital and Pathfinder Capital purchased SmithBooks from Federal Industries, and later that year acquired Coles from Southam Inc. The strategy was to build a strong base company and use its financial strength to invest in the development of large format book superstores.
In April 1995, the merger of SmithBooks and Coles was finalized, and in November 1995, the new company, Chapters Inc. opened its first two book superstores and from there grew to become the largest book retailer in Canada, operating bookstores in all provinces, under the names Chapters, Coles, SmithBooks, and World's Biggest Bookstore. By 2000, the chain had expanded to 14 locations across Canada. Every white person should read this Reviewer: KayJohn from Markham, Ontario, CA Date: 7/5/2002 9:42:06 AM Michael Moore has hit the nail on the head...and on the thumbs of some very disgruntled rich white men. He clearly has researched well and stating the reason why the world is messed up: the Caucasian race. He pokes fun even at himself for being white. His chapters all have to do with a major theme: black people. The environment. The battle of the sexes. President Bush (his analysis and findings on the 2000 election should bring Bush to shame!) I think that this book should be read once, twice and three times by the white men in power. If one white man can see that things need to change in the way of blacks and media, or how women are treated, shouldn't the lot of them? Being an African-Canadian, I instantly laughed out loud when I saw the title of the book. I just HAD to pick it up. Having a white man write about stupid people in his race was priceless. Good for humor, but much better for intellects who can divulge and discuss such issues.
