The Baudelaires have found yet another guardian -- the mysterious owner of the Lucky Smells Lumber Mill in the town of Paltryville. The luckless trio of Violet, Klaus and Sunny are convinced that this home will be no better than any of the others they've had since their parents' tragic deaths. They couldn't be more correct. In the other books, there was at least a sympathetic guardian who was hideously dispatched by the obsessive Count Olaf who covets the Baudelaire's fortune. The Miserable Mill , however, has only Phil, the relentlessly optimistic mill worker and Charles, the well-meaning but ineffectual partner of Sir, the mill owner who for no reason has a cloud of cigar smoke in place of a head. The idea of children toiling in a dangerous lumber mill is not the laugh-riot you might think and the villains are even more transparent than ever. The macabre optometrist/hypnotist Dr. Georgina Orwell (a meaningless reference) has no motivation for her misdeeds, but meets a suitably gory end and the ever-present Olaf is cross-dressing this time, insisting that a wig, false high voice and nameplate qualify him as Shirley, the optometrist's receptionist. Ages 9 and up. From the Publisher Dear Reader, I hope, for your sake, that you have not chosen to read this book because you are in the mood for a pleasant experience. If this is the case, I advise you to put this book down instantaneously, because of all the books describing the unhappy lives of the Baudelaire orphans, The Miserable Mill might be the unhappiest yet. Violet, Klaus, and Sunny Baudelaire are sent to Paltryville to work in a lumber mill, and they find disaster and misfortune lurking behind every log. The pages of this book, I’m sorry to inform you, contain such unpleasantries as a giant pincher machine, a bad casserole, a man with a cloud of smoke where his head should be, a hypnotist, a terrible accident resulting in injury, and coupons. I have promised to write down the entire history of these three poor children, but you haven’t, so if you prefer stories that are more heartwarming, please feel free to make another selection. With all due respect, Lemony Snicket Store Review Jill from Chapters # 934, Lethbridge, AB This fourth outrageous misadventure of the Beaudelaire orphans finds them sent to live and work in the Paltryville lumber mill, once again trying to outwit the evil Count Olaf. These books might be subtitled "Why won't adults listen to kids?" and will find many sympathetic readers. They are not, however, for the squeamish -- reminiscent of Roald Dahl in The Witches. I hated book one when I started it, but was captivated by the appeal of the children themselves, and by the author's wonderful style, which manages to shield the reader from the full impact of the horrid happenings. About the Author Lemony Snicket grew up near the sea and currently lives beneath it. To his horror and dismay, he has no wife or children, only enemies, associates, and the occasional loyal manservant. His trial has been delayed ,so he free to continue researching and recording the tragic tales of the Baudelaire orphans for HarperCollins. Talk about miserable Reviewer: Crystal from Niagara Falls Ontario Date: 5/24/2001 5:11:46 PM Once again the Bauladaires have been sent to another place to live their unlucky miserable life! This time they are sent to live in the Luckysmells Lumbermill. Klaus gets hypontized and almost kills his boss's asstant. But that's nothing compared to how Count Olaf disguizes himself..... as a girl!! A responist named Shirley. If you have read the other three books in this series then you must know how exciting this next book will be. I highly recommand this book to any person who loves adventure and bravery. I can tell you one thing with this book you are in for know dissapointment. 3. Miserable Yes, Great No Doubt Reviewer: Brittani from Surrey,B.C Date: 1/5/2001 1:51:32 PM This wonderful book is packed with mystery and adventure. It was definitely a book I couldn't put down. I read it in a day! I definitely reccomend this book if you don't mind the miserable and unfortunate lives of the Baudelaire children. It is just as great as the first three. 4. More bad luck Reviewer: Jamal Vincent from Toronto Ontario Date: 11/4/2000 4:29:18 PM This is the fourth book of the Baudelaire childrens' horrible lives of despair and bad luck and it is great! Klaus gets hypnotised, causing horrible accidents; Sunny has a sword fight and they are all forced to live with a mean man with a cloud of smoke for a head who feeds them gum for lunch, makes them do hard labour and pays the other workers only in coupons. Count Olaf is nowhere to be found. This book beats Harry Potter by a mile! 5. Not for Kids Who Scare Really Easily! Reviewer: Kath from Calgary, Alberta Date: 9/16/2000 1:26:36 AM Okay, wonderful book, Lemony Snicket does it again, but, as someone does have a rather nasty run-in with a saw in a mill, use discresion. I'm just hoping there's no movie. Ick. But it is a cool book, and I loved it. The Baudelaires are child laborors! And with that would-be wonderful library, and nice "partner" (Ha! Slave would be more apropriate), they're SO close. And also so close to being captured by Count Olaf. Read all of the reviews...
